New methods in high purity crystal growth

We are working to develop new methods of high purity single crystal growth targeted at ultrapure quantum materials synthesis.  A major focus here is the development of new platforms for floating zone bulk crystal growth.  This technique has long driven new fields of science by producing single crystals nearly free of disorder effects where delicate quantum states can manifest and be resolved.  Our goal is to push the pressure bounds of this technique upward so that it can be employed on new classes of volatile materials traditionally prohibited from floating zone growth.  New extremes in pressure will also enable metastable phases to form and open new windows into materials frontiers where high purity bulk crystal growth has been problematic.
