Wilson Group: Scattering + Synthesis

Welcome to the homepage of the Wilson group in the Materials Department at UCSB. Our research focus is the exploration of magnetism, lattice dynamics, and electronic phase behaviors in spin-orbit driven phases of matter, unconventional superconductors, and, more broadly, emergent phenomena in correlated electron materials. Specific areas under investigation include spin-orbit assisted Mott state in iridium oxides, topologically nontrivial electronic states, high temperature superconductors, symmetry breaking in itinerant magnets, and quantum criticality near electronic instabilities.

The primary experimental tools used in our studies are neutron and synchrotron x-ray scattering techniques in addition to bulk electronic properties characterization. We conduct experiments at national and international neutron and synchrotron x-ray sources exploring static and fluctuating phase behaviors, whereas our on campus activities encompass single crystal growth and novel materials synthesis complemented by in-house bulk property measurements.
